Tapa

Lie down, Month of May

and June

and July, your noble subjects

hauled from or returned, like

seabed turtles, to

sleep –

the cat that lives inside

the dog, the out-of-luck bird

the esteemed chickens of Rapa Nui in

their rocky citadels, overseeing

the lesser affairs of men –

such tales they tell us

of over-arching horizon

and quarried sea. And all of this

is recorded in

the tapa, and all of this

is spoken to me

by the paperbark cloth.

A liberal economy

So broadcasts the loudspeaker

lizard, a hymn

in praise of the Royal Tongan

Satellite Programme,

the law-abiding tuna fleets of fair, distant

lands, fishing rights

for local fishers, mobile telephones for

banana palms.
